The Southeastern Model Show siphoned off a lot of the regular racers as they attempted to jump-start the economy by traveling to Perry , Georgia with full wallets and empty airplane haulers. Eighteen regulars did register to race, however, and took part in some great races! For unknown reasons, the carnage was high in proportion to the total heats flown.
Only Bill Barlow had a perfect day going into the Gold Race, with two others (Jim Neelands and Jerry Dittmar) one point behind.
The racers are getting more creative in finding ways to NOT get to the Gold Race! Take Ted Barker, for example. He’s no stranger to having encounters with pylons, but this time he attacked the number two pylon at exactly ninety degrees to the race course; quote unique! The most creative ‘excuse’ was during the fly-off for the final Gold slot between Dave Wall and Russell Stricker.
They were both airborne and jockeying for the start as the two-minute countdown continued. They took the thirty-second horn; the fifteen-second horn, and the calls: 14 – 13 – 12 – 11 – 10 – 9 – and then  “S*P*L*A*T* went the mid-air!” Herb Chutter was then moved into the Gold.
When the symbolic checkered flag dropped, Jim Neelands had won, followed by Jerry Dittmar and Bill Barlow. The next race will be hosted by the Flying Gators at their recently refurbished Ray D. Helpling R/C Aerodrome located in Archer on April 5th. We are expecting some new racers to show up at this race; introduce yourselves and make them feel welcomed!
